HTC Desire – In Depth Review Pt 3

As promised, here’s Part 3 of the HTC In Depth Review. This time around we’re going to have a look at what should be the basics of any smartphones, it’s calendaring and mobile office features. On top of that we’ll be looking at its GPS functions. If you’ve missed the other reviews here it is : Part 1 – Sense UI and basic telephone functions and Part 2 – Multimedia and web browsing capabilities.

Calendar

The HTC Desire calendar comes with four different views (daily, weekly, monthly and agenda). HTC has been gracious enough to even include 3 widgets to be placed on homescreen so you can easily have a glance at your schedule without having to open the Calendar application.  Creating an event is as easy as clicking on the big plus button on the bottom right and then filling in the necessary details.

Apart from your basic such as location, description, times and dates; you’ll also be able to choose which calendar you would like to sync to, very useful for those with multiple Gmail accounts ie personal and office. You’ll also get to choose which calendar you would like to be displayed in your calendar app from list of multiple accounts you have.

There’s also an option to set reminders and send guests invite. Just type in the person’s name and it will look through your contacts for the closest match. Now there’s no more reason for missing that important meeting or event 😀

Variety of notebooks and netbooks

P1 & Intel are currently working with 6 oem partners (Acer, Asus, Dell, Lenovo, MSi and Toshiba) to bring forth the next generation of notebooks and netbooks so variety is definitely not going to be an issue here. There are also 4 other countries that have implemented WiMAX and guess what, Malaysia is the first country in South East Asia to provide such a service even before Singapore and Hong Kong !!

A Tragic Incident at Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2010 – Updated

Filed under: Events — yoga @ 7:23 pm

Just woke up after coming home from the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2010 only to read about a 20+ year old who passed out and then died on the way to the hospital. I only recall passing by 2 water stations and one medical station at Federal Highway during my 10km run. My condolences to Lim’s family. I’m appalled that an ambulance doesn’t have the necessary equipment to save a life, are all ambulances like this or just this particular one in question ?

I also remember being at the finish line and waiting for my turn to get water/100 plus and an ambulance pleading with everyone to give way. To make things worst those at the water station were stuck and couldn’t move anywhere because there were runners coming by and the officials had to clear the path to ensure that the runners had a clear road. It was so packed and there were moments when I myself fell short of breath and had difficulty breathing, in fact I remember there being an announcement over the PA system at that exact moment asking for a medic as well !!

Update 01/07/2010

– Runner dies after collapsing during marathon (Malay Mail)

– Help arrived 5 mins after distress call (Malay Mail)

– Just found out that there’s a facebook group created for Lim Weiji plus here’s DBKL’s official statement on the whole matter.

HTC Desire – In Depth Review Pt 2

Have decided to break the review into a few parts so that it’s easier for readers to digest 😀 Part 2 of the review we’ll be looking at the multimedia capabilities of the HTC Desire as well as it’s web browsing capabilities. Here’s Part 1 of the review if you’ve missed it.

Photos application

Upon launching the photos application, you’ll be presented with a list of albums with thumbnails. The photos application automatically locates and videos irrelevant of which folder it was stored in. Next to the folder name there’s a number that indicates the amount of images in each folder and each folder is displayed with the thumbnail of the latest image. At the bottom of the application there are 3 virtual buttons, one for the folder listing, another for Facebook albums and the last Flickr.

The HTC Desire support multi-touch and this can be done while browsing the images, the same action for zooming in and out as the iPhone is used. Double clicking on the image zooms it back to 100%.

HTC Desire – In Depth Review Pt 1

After using the HTC Desire for two weeks I can finally take some time off to do a proper review. If you’ve missed my initial impressions on the HTC Desire you can check it out here.

The one most obvious thing that sets the HTC Desire apart from other Android devices is the Sense UI. Aside from the hardware changes from their award winning HTC Hero the Sense UI has also been revised to include new context icons, new animated wallpapers and the unified Widgets. Even though the HTC Legend comes with an AMOLED screen and the new sense UI, the Desire offers sharper images compared to the Legend due to it’s higher pixel density (252 vs 180 ppi).

Sense UI

There are three virtual keys and an arched scroll bar which indicates on which of the 7 homescreens you currently are on. The left key launches the main menu where all the applications are listed, the middle key is a shortcut to the Phone app and the right key launches the “Add to home” menu. The new Sense UI also introduces something called the Leap View which shows all 7 homescreens in small thumbs. Tapping on one of them will open up the particular homescreen.

12 essential apps for the Desire

After much persuasion I’ve finally got my very own .com Please do update your bookmarks to my new blog

http://www.yogaretnam.com

Now that I’ve covered the awesome games and cool applications on the Desire, it’s time to finally find the essential Swiss army knife for the Desire. After all even with the greatest hardware, it will still be a mediocre experience without the right software to fully utilize it’s capabilities.

In no particular order here’s a list of applications that I install every time I reset the Desire, yes I’ve done it countless number of times during the past week or so, all in the name of thoroughly testing it out 😀

1. Astro File Manager

As it’s name suggest, Astro File manager is basically a File Manager for the Android. It allows you to manipulate the files on the Desire without having to connect it to a computer. Some of the things that Astro File Manager allows you to do

  • Manage all files on your SD card (copy, move, rename)
  • Manage multiple files and directories at once
  • Backup applications
  • Manage running applications
  • Send files as attachments
  • View thumbnails and images
  • Browse and create compressed files like Zip and Tar

One really useful feature of Astro is the ability to backup applications to the SD card. This is basically a band-aid solution for those who are running out of internal memory space. You can backup the installer files of applications you seldom use but want them around just in case you need them one day. Back it up to the SD card, uninstall it and free up precious internal memory. If ever you need it again browse to the SD card and reinstall it.

Apart from that you can now browse compressed files like Zip and Tar files. If you’ve ever received an email with zip files attachment, you know how frustrating it is to not be able to open it, well now with Astro you can open it just like a directory. You can copy, move, delete or even rename  individual files without having to extract the whole file. A must have for those who download files with their Desire.

Difference between HTC Desire and Nexus One

Desire vs Nexus One

Desire vs Nexus One

I’m pretty sure this topic has been extensively covered over the web and like many I was rather curious to see what are the main difference between these two phones running on Eclair which comes from the same manufacturer HTC. So what set’s them apart ? I’ll be trying to focus more on the hardware and software factor since the look and feel of each devices can be very personal.

Hardware

The most obvious thing setting the two almost identical phones apart is the physical buttons and optical tracker found on the Desire, the Nexus One comes with touch buttons and trackball. I’m obviously a fan of physical buttons as it’s more reassuring feeling the “click” when pressing a button and knowing it should do what you want it to do.

The physical dimensions are also rather similiar, the Nexus One measuring at 119 x 59.8 x 11.5 mm where else the Desire is 119 x 60 x 11.9 mm. With such a small difference between the physical size it’s really hard to tell the difference. Both of the units comes with a 1400 mAH but it’s pretty hard to gauge the battery life as it all depends on the type of usage of the device. The Nexus One strangely comes with only Bluetooth v2 compared and Desire runs on Bluetooth 2.1, not like it makes that big of a difference anyway. The Desire also comes with FM radio but lacks the active noise cancellation and the triband HSDPA/WCDMA of the Nexus One.

Both devices comes with a 5MP camera with autofocus and flash. The only difference here is the effective pixel resolution with the Nexus One offering 2592 x 1944 while the Desire offers 2560 x 1920 effective pixel resolution. You can barely see the difference anyway on most pictures. The other difference is the video capture capabilities; the Nexus One captures at 20fps while the Desire is at 30fps.

The insides of the phone are rather identical as well. Both comes with a 1Ghz Snapdragon Processor (Qualcomm QSD 8250), a 3.7″ AMOLED screen at 480×800 pixels. Both comes with 512MB of ROM, however the Nexus One comes with 512MB RAM while the Desire comes with 576MB instead. Wonder if the extra RAM is in place to help ensure the smoothness of the Sense UI.

Software

As soon as you switch both the phones on you’ll immediately see the difference on the Desire which comes with HTC Sense UI (2.1). This makes the Desire look and feel so much sexier, honestly. Okay I might be slightly biased since I’ve been using the HTC Tattoo for quite some time but friends who have seen both the user interface side by side definitely liked having Sense UI as well.

Apart from just being pretty, HTC has added their own widgets to further customise the home screen. Sense gets updates from Facebook,Twitter and Flickr and updates each Contact record plus combines all that into a single Friend Stream feed that you can put onto your home screen. That’s just one of the widgets they have on the Desire; HTC has an awesome animated weather widget, integration with the SMS client and their own Twitter client called Peep. There’s even a pinch zoom gesture on the home screen that allows you to minimse all seven panes and displays it all with the so called “helicopter view”. A more in depth review on the available software on the Desire at a later time 🙂

With such heavy customisation from HTC, there a price to pay, HTC has to play catch-up when it comes to the core Android updates. HTC has to rework their custom UI to suit the changes deployed on a new revision. One classic example is HTC Hero owners who have been waiting for Android 2.1 on their devices despite being promised numerous time on a release date. Desire is currently their flagship model so it would be happening anytime soon but bear in mind Hero was also HTC’s flagship model few years back.

Conclusion

At the end of the day both devices sport the latest technology to run on Android 2.1 (Eclair) and neither will leave the user disappointed. The Desire being officially distributed by SiS locally will definitely be a better choice for those who are want to have the peace of mind when it comes to warranty claims. Many would chose the HTC Desire over the Nexus One simply because of the Sense UI, it just makes the Android so much sexier and not forgetting the fact that Maxis is currently heavily subsidising the Desire just makes it even more desirable 🙂

Filed under: Events — yoga @ 5:47 pm

I was fortunate enough to be invited for the launch of Crocs Malaysia website few days back, okay it was last week but I’ve been busy 😀 Apart from the website, they were also introducing the Crocband Nation Crocs in conjuction with the World Cup. Now you not only can support your favourite team by wearing a jersey, you can wear them on your feet as well with Crocs !!

If you’ve read my previous post on the Crocs wearhouse sale, you would know that I bought a few pair of Crocs to replace my aging one. Seriously you’ll never know how good a pair of Crocs is until you try one out yourself. Another topic for another day perhaps 😉

The event was at this place called Friendscino at Damansara Perdana. Now if you’re trying to figure out why does the name sound so familiar, it was previously also known as Friendster 🙂 Upon arriving the first thing that demands attention is the big truck with Crocs decals, which was where we were required to register as well.
