Relay for Life 2010

For 16 hours people from all varying ages and background got together for one common goal, to support the Relay for Life which was organised by The National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM).

I missed out attending the one last year and promised myself this year I would make up for it. When I heard that Niki Cheong is organising a Social Media Initiative to support Relay of Life I knew I had to join it.

It started raining heavily in the evening and the event was scheduled to begin at 6pm. Decided to wait it out and only got to the place around 7pm. Just in time to miss the survivor walk.

Met up with the rest of the gang who took part in the Social Media Initiative. We just hung around waiting for more people to join since certain parts of town was still heavy with traffic. While waiting we hung around the celebrity booth and some of the guys got themselves a light stick via donation.

Then came the Luminaria ceremony, which commemorates the people who have lost their life to cancer, are currently fighting cancer and not forgetting those who have triumphed over cancer. A moment of silence was observed as the lanterns were lighted up. The light bearers walked the track and all of us joined them. I took my time walking the track and occasionally stopped to read the messages on the lanterns. It was a very heart warming and wrenching moment especially with There You’ll be playing over the loudspeakers.

Throughout the night there were numerous performances to accompany people who were walking around the track. The objective was to never leave the track empty so everyone basically just walked at their own pace, though of course there were some that were actually running and jogging as well.

This went on for throughout the whole night and the morning for 16 hours. It was such an amazing feeling watching everyone come together for just one cause and even though it rained early in the morning that didn’t stop people from their journey.

By 7:30 am the whole field was filled with people following the early morning exercise routine, it was such an amazing sight. As the sun started rising more and more people joined in to celebrate the last few hours of Relay for Life. It was such a joyous occasion and more of a celebration.

During the last few minutes of the event everyone got onto the field as we took our final lap. 16 hours have come and gone and though for some it was just a one day event, they got to feel what it feels like to be out of their comforts for one day and to roughly know what goes through the mind of someone who has cancer. I reached my goal of being there for more than 16 hours. Next year I’m gonna go back with even more people and stay for the whole event 🙂

  2. It was a pleasure meeting up like minded people to join for a single cause 🙂 Do let me know if there’s anything similar going on. Would love to help out
