For those who still don’t really know what the whole fuss about Android 2.2 Froyo is all about here’s a recap

New User Features

One of the most obvious difference noticeable is the translucent navigation bar that has access to the dialer, app tray and browser.

New Home screen tips widget assists new users on how to configure the home screen with shortcuts and widgets and how to make use of multiple home screens. Another new widget is the app market widget which displays a slideshow of popular apps in the Android Market. The Google search bar has undergone some modification and now lets you search the web, contacts or apps. The YouTube widget has been given a slight facelift and now shows previews of the most viewed videos.

Exchange support

Exchange Calendars are now supported in the Calendar application.

Auto-discovery: you just need to know your user-name and password to easily set up and sync an Exchange account (available for Exchange 2007 and higher).

Global Address Lists look-up is now available in the Email application, enabling users to auto-complete recipient names from the directory.

With the LED flash now enabled for the Camcorder, videos can be shot at night or in low light settings.

Certain devices like the Nexus One can be turned into a portable Wi-Fi hotspot that can be shared with up to 8 devices. You can use your Android-powered phone as a 3G connection for a Windows or Linux laptop by connecting their phone to the computer with a USB cable. The connection is then shared between the two devices.

Multi language Keyboard

Multi-lingual users can add multiple languages to the keyboard and switch between multiple Latin-based input languages by swiping across the space bar. This changes the keys as well as the auto-suggest dictionary.

Stop Android from loading certain images or audio files

Do you ever get into a situation where you were listening to your songs on the SD card and suddenly it starts playing your notification or alerts as well ? How about wanting to keep your Gallery clean and not have it display images of your cache or icons from certain applications as well ? If you’ve answer yes to either one, then here’s the solution to fix that problem; create a “.nomedia” file.

Here’s an easy trick that should only take a couple of minutes to keep unwanted audio files from popping up.

1.On your computer, open Notepad or any other text editor

2.Save the blank file as “.nomedia”
Make sure that the Save as type is set as “All Files” instead of “Text documents”

3.Copy that file to the folder on your SD card containing audio files you don’t want to show up.

4.Reboot your phone and the files should no longer be viewable

Firefox 4 is now out for your favourite Android and Nokia Maemo devices although still in beta it’s made a huge leap in terms of stability and performance.

Some improvements include more pan/zoom responsiveness, faster booting and better page load times, the latter specifically due to JavaScript enhancements. The beta also includes features such as Firefox Sync (which lets you seamlessly carry your tabs, bookmarks and history between devices, whether those devices be mobile or desktop), tabbed browsing, Firefox add-ons and more.

UberSocial replaces ÜberTwitter

If you spent the weekend under a rock or some remote island without the use of any technology, you’ll suddenly find that ÜberTwitter is not working anymore. Fret not, your phone is not at fault and you don’t need to go out and get a new one.

ÜberTwitter has been suspended from being used on Twitter due to violations of Twitter policy.

Here’s the response we received from Carolyn Penner, Twitter’s spokeswoman:

We ask all developers in Twitter ecosystem to abide by a simple set of rules that are in the interests of our users, as well as the health and vitality of the platform as a whole.

We often take actions to enforce these rules; in fact, on an average day we turn off more than one hundred services that violate our API rules of the road. This keeps the ecosystem fair for everyone.

Android Low on space

If you’re like me and love to try out new apps and games for the Android, I’m pretty sure you’d have gotten this message on your Android phone at one point or another. Honestly, this can really be irritating especially when you have friends with iPhone who mock you because of it. C’mon Android get your act together, even Froyo users are not spared from this issue.

The Issue

As I’ve mentioned previously, Android phones have internal and external storage. Just because you have a 32GB microSD doesn’t mean that you have that much space to install as many apps as you like. The internal storage is used up instead and with Froyo you can now have a choice of installing those apps and games to the microSD card instead. So what seems to be the issue you ask ? It’s the data and cache that these apps use. Yes, despite being able to move some of those bigger apps to the microSD card, Android still insists on storing the data and cache required to run the specific app. So how do you go around resolving this issue ?

The Solutions

If you’re a visual person and likes to know what takes up your space this is something you should download, DiskUsage from the Market. This nifty little app allows you a basic visualisation of your phone’s internal and microSD storage space. Really helps when you need to know what is taking up so much space on the SD card. Knowing which apps are taking up the most space in your phone allows you to decide what you want to do with it. Yes, it’s a FREE app ! 🙂

You can grab it from the Market using the scan-able QR code , or search for “DiskUsage.”

Android 2.2 (Froyo) : Move apps to SD card

If you have Android 2.2 (Froyo) installed or have updated to it, you’re in luck. You have the option to move some of those memory hogs to the SD card, freeing up precious internal storage.  Go to SettingsApplications Menu, and choose Manage Applications. Switch to the All tab, hitMenu button and Sort by size.

From here you’ll know what are your biggest apps and you can start moving them to your SD card. unfortunately not all apps can be moved to SD, you’ll have to just try and see which works. You can start moving apps to the SD BUT there is a downside to this. When you have your SD card mounted on for disk drive/mass storage access, that app will not not available. Plus if you ever get your SD card corrupted, say good bye to your app. A small price to pay for the space reclaimed if you ask me.

Deftones rocked Kuala Lumpur

Deftones Live in Kuala Lumpur

Deftones Live in Kuala Lumpur

Do you remember what you did on Valentine’s Day ? For the thousands of Deftones fans that skipped the whole Valentine’s dinner and instead rocked the night away at KL Live had an incredidble night that will not be forgotten any time soon.

First off I got to confess, I’m not a very big Deftones fan and probably have only heard 2-3 songs that I liked or at least found enjoyable to listen to. Yes you all can start booing now, I’ve somehow managed to miss the whole Deftones phase while growing up. I did manage to speak to a few fans though while waiting for the concert to start and let me tell you; they were stoked !!

Some of them practically grew up listening to Deftones and have waited alm0st 15 years to watch them perform live ! Imagine that, waiting for so long to watch your favourite band on stage, singing the songs you grew up to. Heck, even I was feeling excited despite not being a hard-core fan.

The concert dubbed as the Twisted Valentine had several local celebrities walk down the black carpet. I even spotted One Buck Short, Reza Salleh and Liyana Fizi walking down the carpet.

One Buck Short

It’s amazing to see people actually lining up and running into the pit just to be right in front where all the action is. These people are either really hard core fans or just plain crazy I tell you. I guess that’s the whole fun of being in the pit in the first place right ? 🙂

The Whitest Boy Alive Invades KL

The Whitest Boy AliveThe Whitest Boy Alive are coming to Kuala Lumpur. Last year we were lucky enough to have Kings Of Convenience stop by and with a sold-out show; it was one of the best intimate show of the year as Eirik and Erlend kept us mesmerised with their humorous yet enchanting performance.

Well, while Kings Of Convenience is not swinging by again, prolific Erlend Øye (one-half of the Kings Of Convenience) will be back in town with his other band, The Whitest Boy Alive. Deftones cancel Bangkok

Deftones in Bangkok

Deftones in Bangkok

Heard that Deftones cancelled the Bangkok show due to some technical difficulties with the equipment and enraged fans broke into a riot !! Still trying to dig for more info about what the actual cause is.

Who on earth is the organizer and could such a thing be so easily overlooked ? Here is some info on electricity in Thailand.

Must be really heart breaking to be waiting in line for hours and when it’s almost show time, to be informed that the concert is cancelled. I can feel the frustration building up even though I’m not there. That being said violence is never an answer and let’s hope that Deftones make a  trip to Bangkok soon because they totally rocked KL !!

  • Manager pulled the plug, safety of the band members are more important than going on with the show
  • Apparently the equipment brought was 110v where else Thailand uses 220v.
  • Refund for tickets bought from Thai Ticket Major
  • The reason

Due to local power issues that threatened the safety of the band and their fans, Deftones were forced to cancel their show last night at the Thunderdome in Bangkok, Thailand.
