Heard rave remarks about Whatsapp new group chat from fellow iPhone and Blackberry users and now it’s finally available on the Android as well.

If you have not heard of or used Whatsapp before or even a new smartphone user, this is one app that you won’t want to miss. For many Blackberry users, the only thing keeping them glued to their phones is Blackberry Messenger (BBM). Unlike the BBM, Whatsapp Messenger is a cross platform that supports iPhone,Android,Blackberry and even Nokia (S60).

Whatsapp

Whatsapp

Whatsapp allows you to IM all your friends, no matter which phone they are using and not only do you get to chat with each other but you’re able to share files and multimedia contents as well. One feature that was missing from Whatsapp before this was group chat and with the latest update, Android users can join in as well.

Collaboration with your friends or even work mates could never be any easier. Sharing pictures, locations, videos are just a few clicks away. The best part ? It’s still under beta for the Android platform and despite still being under beta, it’s been rock solid and didn’t cause my phone to freeze or reboot. It’s currently FREE for the Android. It only costs USD 1.99 a year anyway, yes yes it’s cheaper on the iPhone but at least we’re enjoying it for free now !! 🙂

Download it now !!

Samsung Galaxy S II unveiled

Samsung Galaxy S II

Samsung Galaxy S II

Finally the successor to Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S has been announced, the Samsung Galaxy S II. It comes with a 4.27″ WVGA Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen and it comes with a Samsung dual-core processor in an extremely thin 8.49 mm body as compared to 9.9 mm on the Galaxy S and to my surprise it’s lighter as well.

It comes loaded with extras such as

  • Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)
  • TouchWiz UI v4.0
  • Gyroscope sensor
  • 16GB/32GB storage, 1 GB RAM
  • 8 MP (3264×2448 pixels) camera with autofocus and LED flash (finally !!)
  • Full HD video recording (1080p@30fps)
  • 2MP secondary camera for video calls
  • Connectivity includes HSPA+ together with WiFi a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0+HS.
  • Li-Ion 1650 mAh

I have no idea how Samsung pulled it off and manage to pack so much feature and technology into the new Galaxy S II and still keep it light. They even increased the battery capacity and it now comes with a 1650 mAh, to power it all up. I can’t wait to see how it fares with the Google Nexus S and what Apple has up their sleeve this year with the iPhone.

Upgrade and jailbreak iOS 4.2.1

The iPod touch that I have came with 3.1.3 and when iOS 4 was announced I upgraded it to 4.1; that’s as far as I went . With the recent announcement of greenpoisOn’s untethered jailbreak for 4.2.1, I decided to upgrade the iPod.

Before upgrade

Before upgrade

Backup via iTunes

Backup via iTunes

1. As a rule of thumb always do a backup before messing around with the OS. Just connect the device to iTunes, right click on it and select “Back Up” and let iTunes do it’s magic.

If you have previously jailbreak your device and already have loads of apps installed via Cydia, make sure you backup that as well. There are several methods of doing so but the two easiest ones are via aptbackup or pkgbackup. Both can be downloaded via Cydia though please take note that pkgbackup is a paid app. Based on some of the forums I’ve been reading seems like pkgbackup is a more reliable solution though it’s still not a 100% guarantee.

New device or restore

2. After the backup, click on “Update” to download and install the new firmware.

3. Once the device is upgraded, iTunes will prompt to setup the device as new or restore from a backup, choose “Set Up A New ..” and continue, cancel the sync and eject the device.

4. Click here to download greenpois0n for MAC or WINDOWS.  Save the file to your computer desktop.

5. Locate the file and open the application. You may need to extract/unzip the file.

Finally Greenpois0n for iOS 4.2.1 on Windows

Greenpois0n

Greenpois0n

Recently an updated version of the the Greenpois0n tool became available for Mac users and allowed for untethered jailbreaking of iOS 4.2.1 devices. Now Windows users are finally able to get in on the fun as well.

As Engadget points out, the official Greenpois0n website is not able to keep up with the volume of happy Windows users at the moment, so here’s a download mirror link that’s a bit more likely to work right now. [via Engadget]

St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival 2011 – Singapore

!!! (Chk Chk Chk) ~ BEACH HOUSE ~ DEERHUNTER ~ FOALS ~ HOLY F*** LADYHAWKE ~  THE TEMPER TRAP ~ WARPAINT ~ YEASAYER – The lineup for Laneway Festival 2011, Singapore.

Rainway, Lameway, Mudway, Rainfest and my personal favourite Rainway Mudlane 2011 !! Everyone had their own words to describe Laneway Festival but despite it all, everyone left Fort Canning that night with an experience worth remembering. The pouring rain throughout the whole festival  failed to dampen the spirit and enthusiasm of the fans who were moving, shaking, shouting, singing, jumping the day/night away to their favourite band and tunes. It’s hard not to get carried away with the energy level of the crowd.

I have to admit when I first heard about Laneway Festival I had doubts about going for it, as I only knew a couple of bands and wasn’t too sure about lasting the 10-11 hours the festival was scheduled for. Now that I’ve survived Laneway and got the chance to meet some of the bands and experienced their music live; I AM A CHANGED MAN !!

The journey started off at 7:45 am, as we caught the first bus out of KL heading south to Singapore. With one stop in between, we only managed to get to the Singapore Immigration at 1pm. With Laneway opening it’s gate at the exact same time, I was pretty sure we were going to be late and might even miss the opening act; Warpaint !! We only managed to check in the hotel at 3pm and I was busy reading the updates on Laneway as LadyHawke prepares to get on stage. Missing two acts now, we grabbed a lunch and rushed over even though it was already starting to drizzle because there’s no way I’m going to miss Beach House.

Just as I arrived at the entrance, I heard Beach House starting off their set. Practically ran to the stage/big screen after getting my ticket validated; only to be mesmerised by Victoria Legrand on her organ and Alex Scally on guitar. They held me in a trance as I helplessly swayed to the music from Walk in the Park onwards. Her dreamy vocals and haunting lyrics made the rain feel like it was part of Beach House’s set as I closed my eyes and let her take the lead. Some of my favourites were Walk in the Park, Zebra, Used To Be and Norway.
