The Whitest Boy Alive in Kuala Lumpur

After much persuasion I’ve finally got my very own .com Please do update your bookmarks to my new blog

http://www.yogaretnam.com

Have never heard of The Whitest Boy Alive ? Don’t worry, you’re not the only one. I had many friends who were asking who was this whitest boy alive and is he anything like that white boy in Powder; which is a 90’s movie for those of you who don’t know. Once I mentioned that it’s one half of Kings of Convenience; who brought the house down during their very first Kuala Lumpur show last year, only then did some of them go “Ahhhhhhh”.

The Whitest Boy Alive

The Whitest Boy Alive

The Whitest Boy Alive (TWBA) is three-fourths German and one-fourth Norwegian. Erlend Øye, the Norse quarter this musical pie, is better known as half of indie band duo Kings of Convenience (KOC). This time he sings again, yielding electric guitars and dancier tunes thanks to his mates from Deutschland: Marcin Öz on bass, Sebastian Maschat on drums and Daniel Nentwig on keyboards. What started off as a side project during a Berlin stint back in 2003 has evolved, now they tour the world showcasing their unique music style. TWBA is a little bit pop, a little bit rock, a little bit disco, but completely bound to get you feeling good and busting out those moves on the floor.

Deftones rocked Kuala Lumpur

Deftones Live in Kuala Lumpur

Deftones Live in Kuala Lumpur

Do you remember what you did on Valentine’s Day ? For the thousands of Deftones fans that skipped the whole Valentine’s dinner and instead rocked the night away at KL Live had an incredidble night that will not be forgotten any time soon.

First off I got to confess, I’m not a very big Deftones fan and probably have only heard 2-3 songs that I liked or at least found enjoyable to listen to. Yes you all can start booing now, I’ve somehow managed to miss the whole Deftones phase while growing up. I did manage to speak to a few fans though while waiting for the concert to start and let me tell you; they were stoked !!

Some of them practically grew up listening to Deftones and have waited alm0st 15 years to watch them perform live ! Imagine that, waiting for so long to watch your favourite band on stage, singing the songs you grew up to. Heck, even I was feeling excited despite not being a hard-core fan.

The concert dubbed as the Twisted Valentine had several local celebrities walk down the black carpet. I even spotted One Buck Short, Reza Salleh and Liyana Fizi walking down the carpet.

It’s amazing to see people actually lining up and running into the pit just to be right in front where all the action is. These people are either really hard core fans or just plain crazy I tell you. I guess that’s the whole fun of being in the pit in the first place right ? 🙂

The Whitest Boy Alive Invades KL

The Whitest Boy AliveThe Whitest Boy Alive are coming to Kuala Lumpur. Last year we were lucky enough to have Kings Of Convenience stop by and with a sold-out show; it was one of the best intimate show of the year as Eirik and Erlend kept us mesmerised with their humorous yet enchanting performance.

This year there will be no Kings of Convenience but Erlend will be back with his other band, The Whitest Boy Alive.
Well, while Kings Of Convenience is not swinging by again, prolific Erlend Øye (one-half of the Kings Of Convenience) will be back in town with his other band, The Whitest Boy Alive. They started as an electronic dance music project in 2003 in Berlin, but have since slowly developed into a band with no programmed elements.

Deftones cancel Bangkok

Deftones in Bangkok

Deftones in Bangkok

Heard that Deftones cancelled the Bangkok show due to some technical difficulties with the equipment and enraged fans broke into a riot !! Still trying to dig for more info about what the actual cause is.

Who on earth is the organizer and could such a thing be so easily overlooked ? Here is some info on electricity in Thailand.

Must be really heart breaking to be waiting in line for hours and when it’s almost show time, to be informed that the concert is cancelled. I can feel the frustration building up even though I’m not there. That being said violence is never an answer and let’s hope that Deftones make a  trip to Bangkok soon because they totally rocked KL !!

Update

  • Manager pulled the plug, safety of the band members are more important than going on with the show
  • Apparently the equipment brought was 110v where else Thailand uses 220v.
  • Refund for tickets bought from Thai Ticket Major
  • The reason

Due to local power issues that threatened the safety of the band and their fans, Deftones were forced to cancel their show last night at the Thunderdome in Bangkok, Thailand.

St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival 2011 – Singapore

!!! (Chk Chk Chk) ~ BEACH HOUSE ~ DEERHUNTER ~ FOALS ~ HOLY F*** LADYHAWKE ~  THE TEMPER TRAP ~ WARPAINT ~ YEASAYER – The lineup for Laneway Festival 2011, Singapore.

Rainway, Lameway, Mudway, Rainfest and my personal favourite Rainway Mudlane 2011 !! Everyone had their own words to describe Laneway Festival but despite it all, everyone left Fort Canning that night with an experience worth remembering. The pouring rain throughout the whole festival  failed to dampen the spirit and enthusiasm of the fans who were moving, shaking, shouting, singing, jumping the day/night away to their favourite band and tunes. It’s hard not to get carried away with the energy level of the crowd.

I have to admit when I first heard about Laneway Festival I had doubts about going for it, as I only knew a couple of bands and wasn’t too sure about lasting the 10-11 hours the festival was scheduled for. Now that I’ve survived Laneway and got the chance to meet some of the bands and experienced their music live; I AM A CHANGED MAN !!

The journey started off at 7:45 am, as we caught the first bus out of KL heading south to Singapore. With one stop in between, we only managed to get to the Singapore Immigration at 1pm. With Laneway opening it’s gate at the exact same time, I was pretty sure we were going to be late and might even miss the opening act; Warpaint !! We only managed to check in the hotel at 3pm and I was busy reading the updates on Laneway as LadyHawke prepares to get on stage. Missing two acts now, we grabbed a lunch and rushed over even though it was already starting to drizzle because there’s no way I’m going to miss Beach House.

Just as I arrived at the entrance, I heard Beach House starting off their set. Practically ran to the stage/big screen after getting my ticket validated; only to be mesmerised by Victoria Legrand on her organ and Alex Scally on guitar. They held me in a trance as I helplessly swayed to the music from Walk in the Park onwards. Her dreamy vocals and haunting lyrics made the rain feel like it was part of Beach House’s set as I closed my eyes and let her take the lead. Some of my favourites were Walk in the ParkZebra, Used To Be and Norway.
