Socks for Japan¬†~ let’s do it!

We’ve all heard about the tragedy that has befallen Japan and everyone has been asking “How do we help ?” but has done nothing about it. Well here’s one way we can contribute directly to those who have been left homeless. It’s raining in Sendai and will soon be snowing.¬†Hypothermia can set in at¬†any time¬†for the victims.¬†¬†The quake has shaken Japan. But it has not shaken our faith in what us fellow humans can do for one another. Its raining now in Sendai and soon it will be snowing. Hyporthemia can set in anytime for the victims if they are not kept warm. Jason Kelly, an American author living in Japan has initiated this campaign and all his friends as well as strangers are helping out.

I learnt of the following Socks for Japan campaign via Poesy and Evelyn :

Read it closely and see how you can chip in.

Alternatively here it is from Jason’s site

Cendol @ Pinkberrys, Malacca

After much persuasion I’ve finally got my very own .com Please do update your bookmarks to my new blog

http://www.yogaretnam.com

Malacca is well¬† known for a lot of things and as a foodie the first thing that comes to mind is the delicious specialties they have such as chicken rice balls, satay celup and cendol. Got an invite from Cerventus to join him and a few other friends for a road trip to Malacca to do nothing other than go around sampling some of the hidden food treasures. Since he was a local, it was definitely an offer I couldn’t refuse.

I love my cendol and am always on the lookout for a perfect bowl.¬† Cerventus told us he would be bringing us to a shop that serves their cendol with authentic gula melaka made from palm sugar and not just thick brown sugar, and no it’s not located in Jonkers Street.

For those who don’t know what cendol is, here’s a quick rundown. It’s basically shaved ice, a worm-like jelly made from rice flour with green colouring (pandan), santan (coconut milk) and gula melaka (palm sugar).Next to these basic recipe; other ingredients such as red beans, glutinous rice, grass jelly, creamed corn and durian also can be included. The makings of a good cendol would be; smooth, sturdy and fragrant worm-like jelly, fresh, creamy, and undiluted coconut milk and definitely the gula melaka (palm sugar). This for me is what separates an average cendol to one that gives you the ultimate sugar rush.

Dataran Pahlawan

Dataran Pahlawan

We were brought to Dataran Pahlawan, initially I thought we were just parking our car there and will make our way to the cendol shop under some tree nearby. After all most of the best food in town are under a tree somewhere or a stall in some alley.

I had my doubts as we reached our destination; Pinkberrys dessert house, which was located in Dataran Pahlawan itself. One of the best cendol in town is in a mall ? For sure you must be kidding right ? Never try, never know. Looking at the menu I was already a little disappointed as there wasn’t any cendol pulut (glutinous rice) available, so I ordered something even better; cendol with durian !! My mouth was already watering just thinking of it. I certainly had high expectations out of this little store.

A lot of people are anxiously waiting for the 11th of March as Apple rolls out the iPad 2 to stores. Before the iPad 2 frenzy starts Apple has officially release the iOS 4.3 for the iPhone, iPad or iPad touch (certain models anyway). The much awaited mobile hotspot functionality for iPhones (I still don’t understand why it’s not made available for the iPad), new Airplay features, new and improved version of Safari, and a number of minor improvements.

Google Instant Previews now on mobile

Mention the word Google and mobile and the first thing that comes to mind will be Android, but this time around the search giant has been really busy improving their web apps, especially the search. Back in November, Google launched Google Instant for mobile devices and now they are back with another new feature; Instant Previews.

You can now start using Google Instant previews, it’s available on mobile for Android (2.2+) and iOS (4.0+). It has the same functionalities as the desktop version allowing you to visually compare search results from webpage snapshots, giving you an idea of the content of the webpage before actually clicking it.

For example, if you‚Äôre looking for a webpage that has both photos and descriptions, you can use Instant Previews to quickly identify these pages by navigating across the visual search results with a few swipes of your finger. Or perhaps you‚Äôre looking for an article, a step-by-step instructions list, or a product comparison chart‚ÄĒwith Instant Previews, you can easily spot pages with the right content without having to navigate back and forth between websites and search results. And when the mobile version of a website is available, it’ll show you a preview of the mobile page.

Chrome To Phone

Have you ever wanted to share a link, copy a bunch of text or even copy a phone number on your PC to your Android phone ? One of the way to go about doing so is to email yourself the contents so that you can retrieve it on the phone. Now thanks to the cloud, Google Chrome to Phone application and the Chrome extension this can be done with a click of a button !

This is one of the most overlooked and underutilised feature of Android 2.2 (Froyo). Chrome to Phone is a simple combination of a Chrome extension and Android application that allows you to click one button in your browser, and sync what you were viewing right to your Android phone to be check out at a later time.

Reading something interesting on the PC but need to head off somewhere ? Simply click on the Chrome to Phone button and the link will automatically be sent to your Android device and you can continue reading it when you have the time. No more remembering urls or bookmark syncing.

Here’s how to get it all setup

1. Those using Google Chrome as their desktop browser should go to the download section of the Google Chrome Extension site and download the Google Chrome to Phone Extension

Mozilla Firefox users should go here to download the Send To Phone 0.8 extension.

2. Once your extension/add-on has finished installing, you’ll need to download the Chrome to Phone app to your Android phone.

3. In addition to choosing a Google account to connect to, you’ll be asked whether you want links to launch automatically as they’re sent to your phone from the desktop or manually.
